Malnutrition is a major problem among the rural poor in Mali. Many of our participants suffer due to inadequate access to proper nutrition and from chronic waterborne illnesses, such as intestinal worms. One aspect of myAgro’s mission is to help farmers out of poverty through access to quality inputs that will increase their harvests and ultimately their livelihoods. For our farmers, having larger harvests means that there will be more access to nutritious food for more months of the year and this is especially important for children who often receive the least amount of food in a family. However, increasing the quantity of food is not enough if some of the nutritional barriers are not also broken. Intestinal worms are a significant problem for the children of Mali and when they go untreated they rob the body of vital nutrients. So even if a child is getting enough to eat, their body is not able to absorb the nutrients because of the intestinal worm infestation.
In order to strengthen myAgro’s commitment to the overall health and well being of our farmers, we offer twice a year de-worming to participant’s children between the ages of 2-13. We are excited to announce that the fall de-worming program schedule has been created and our special health and nutrition agent, Aissata Traore will be traveling to all of our project villages to provide this important benefit to all the children of our participants. By helping farmers to fight poverty first through increasing harvests, myAgro then continues to support our farmers by helping them address malnutrition by combating pervasive problems like intestinal worms.
