Mama Camara is a widowed mother with 8 children from Diabia Senegal village in southern Senegal. She joined myAgro in 2022 in search of ways to increase her harvest.
In her first year with myAgro, Mama has managed to quadruple her yield.
“This year is much better,” she says. “Before myAgro, I only harvested one bag of rice, sometimes half a bag. Now, I harvest 5 bags of 100kg. Growing our own food really helps the household.”
During the school term, Mama sends her children to a boarding school. Before joining myAgro, she worried whether her children ate well.
“I used to send them money to buy rice,” she explains, “but now I send them the rice instead, and I know that they eat well.”
Knowing that she is able to grow a sufficient amount of rice to support her family, Mama has regained faith in herself. “I have already signed up and started to pay for next year’s package.” She continues: “The rice field was beautiful! When people walked by, they would stop to look at it.”
Mama plans to remain with myAgro to expand her knowledge and become a better producer. She believes that a lot of her success this season is a result of the training she received from myAgro.
“Moving forward, I want to become a better farmer with myAgro”, Mama said. “The training really helped as I learned new techniques. For example, we were taught that fertilizer should not be applied when the soil is dry, but rather when it’s wet.”
Mama now plans to invest in machinery to help her work more efficiently in the future. She explains that without machinery, fieldwork is hard. Next year, Mama plans to cultivate more crops in order to be able to invest in machinery.
“I would like to continue with myAgro to be able to save up for a machine,” she explains. “This will help me work more efficiently in the future and grow more.”
