Habiba is a sunflower farmer and mother of 4 from Nachingwea, Tanzania. She was struggling to earn more income to meet her needs so she looked to an additional income source to help so that she can pay her children’s school fees and save for the future. After attending village meetings and connecting with her Village Entrepreneur, Habiba saw the potential for sunflower farming to help her meet her financial goals.
After making little by little payments through myAgro’s mobile layaway platform, Habiba received her inputs and numerous agriculture trainings. The result: Habiba harvested 256kg of dried sunflower on half an acre of farmland. From this harvest, she has over 150 liters of oil that she will sell for additional income and use for cooking for her family. Habiba expects to earn over $100 from the sale of her sunflower oil and she plans to use that extra income to pay her children’s school fees and renovate her home.
Habiba’s story is an example of the impact of sunflower farming in Nachingwea! Habiba is so happy with her harvest that she plans to enroll in a maize package and the myAgro team will continue to support her in her goals to grow more food, earn more income, and support her family.
“For the sunflowers I harvest, my plan is to have oil for cooking. When I use the oil for cooking I save some money to do other things like to pay school fees for my grandchildren and my children as they are studying and depend on me.”
