Tomatoes may seem like a simple fruit, but they are actually a powerful crop with the ability to transform lives. Korotoumou Soumounou, a farmer and mother of nine from Boidié, Mali, experienced the impact of tomatoes first-hand after partnering with myAgro this season.
Before farming tomatoes, Korotoumou was cultivating onions, but she couldn’t grow what she needed to help her and her family thrive. Once she added tomatoes to her farm, she saw a major shift—her tomato harvest generated a profit of 15000 CFA. This profit not only enabled her to feed her family but also provided Korotoumou with the opportunity to put money into savings.
“Before working with myAgro, I was growing onions. But with the tomato crop, I can sell it, make money from it, and even get money for some personal needs,” Korotoumou said. “I will use some of the tomatoes to feed my family on a daily basis and put the surplus money aside.”
In addition to seeds and fertilizer, Korotoumou also received training as part of her myAgro package. During the training, she learned techniques to help her harvest flourish, like the most efficient way to apply fertilizer.
“Everything was explained to us—the dosage for making the bricks, how to lay them out, and the depth of the holes. I think these techniques were a major help in the success of my tomato field,” she shared.
Korotoumou says that she recommends myAgro’s tomato package to other farmers in her community, especially women, as she believes the package has the opportunity to help women, like herself, earn and save money.
“I’ve never had so much benefit before from other crops I’ve grown. In all my time in the garden, I have never seen tomatoes like this,” she said. “I am very happy with the support I got from myAgro, especially in the provision of good quality tomatoes. I tell other women generally to sign up for the tomato package from myAgro because tomato growing is good and there are many benefits, especially for us to seek profit from its sale to finally achieve financial independence.”
